Weekly Update 8/23/19

Dear Parents,
Week 2 is in the books! We are loving the name papers that are coming in! We are continuing to get to know each other, and I’m constantly amazed at how well these students have adjusted to their new room, group of friends, teacher, and first grade expectations!
I wanted to give you a heads-up about Mystery Reader. Due to the likely changes within the school in other grade levels, this could directly impact our schedule as well. It is going to be necessary to change the Mystery Reader Day from Friday to Wednesday (same time 1:30-1:50). Thank you to all who have signed up already, and I am SO sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. I will be deleting the initial sign up and sending a new link for sign ups. If none of the days/times works for you for Mystery Reader, please reach out and let me know. The kids LOVE to have their parents come in and read, so we can work out a time that suits both our schedules.
In addition to the Mystery Reader changes, please note that Curriculum Night for K-1 has been moved to Tuesday, September 3 at 6:30. I look forward to seeing you all then!
Next week, we will work on:
Reading/Phonics: We will continue our first literary (fiction) unit of the year using the book Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. Our main focus will continue to be on story elements (character, setting, problem, and solution) and also using context clues to help figure out unknown words while we are reading. Our phonics pattern will cover the short i sound.
Writing/Grammar: We will set up our Writer’s Workshop time and go over procedures and expectations. Our grammar focus will be on nouns. As a reminder, there was a plastic baggie with two pieces of cardstock that came home on Monday. Please decorate the pieces with pictures from magazines or pictures you’ve taken that are special to your child. This will be used throughout the year in their writing folders as a way to spark ideas for stories. Please send them back by Monday, August 26. Thank you for your help with this project!
Social Studies: The students will work on identifying the seven continents and continue practicing map skills to name their city, county, state, country, and continent.

Happy Birthday to You, Marlene! (8/30)

Weekly Update 8/16/19

Dear Parents,
What an AMAZING week we had in First Grade! We have such a wonderful group of friends, and I can’t wait to see all the growth they’re going to have this year! 😊 We spent a great deal of time this week getting to know each other and going over procedures and school-wide expectations. They got so many compliments as a class in the hallway and at specials, and I am just so proud of them!
I sent out the Sign Up Genius links for Estimation Station and Mystery Reader on Tuesday. If none of the days/times works for you for Mystery Reader, please reach out and let me know. The kids LOVE to have their parents come in and read, so we can work out a time that suits both our schedules.
Class Dojo letters will be coming home on Monday with information on how you can connect to our class and see the positive points your child is getting! I’m also setting up our Seesaw so you can see the great work they’re doing as well. 😊 If you were connected to your child’s Seesaw account last year, you can disregard the letter.
Next week, we will get into the swing of things with our subject areas:
Reading/Phonics: We will begin our first literary (fiction) unit of the year using the book Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes. Our main focus will be on story elements (character, setting, problem, and solution) and also sequencing events within the story. There will be a special paper coming home with your child on Monday as homework for you; we’d love to know you came up with your child’s name and what makes it special. Please send these back as soon as possible. Our phonics pattern will cover the short a sound.
Writing/Grammar: We will set up our Writer’s Workshop time and go over procedures and expectations. Our grammar focus will be on writing complete sentences with appropriate finger-spacing between words.  There will be a plastic baggie with two pieces of cardstock coming home on Monday. Please decorate the pieces with pictures from magazines or pictures you’ve taken that are special to your child. This will be used throughout the year in their writing folders as a way to spark ideas for stories. Please send them back by Monday, August 26. Thank you for your help with this project!
Social Studies: The students will work on locating places on a simple map, identifying cardinal directions, and start identifying and locating their city, county, state, country, and continent. This unit will last approximately 3 weeks.

Math: Because I teach two different levels, I will post these updates on the math tabs on our class website. If your child is in ON level math, they are the ‘Divers.’ If they are in Accelerated Math (Second Grade, First Semester), they are the ‘Splashers.’ For those unfamiliar with the leveling, more information will be given at Curriculum Night, Monday, August 26 at 6:30 PM.

Upcoming Dates:
Monday, August 19: LOTS of items coming home! (Class Dojo letter, Seesaw letter, first Scholastic Book Order flyer, Highlights Magazine Order form, writing project baggie, Name paper)
Monday, August 26: Curriculum Night 6:30 in our classroom; writing folder picture collage due
Thursday, August 29: Fall Picture Day
Friday, August 30: OPTIONAL Scholastic Book order due by check made payable to Scholastic or online using our class code FMLLP. The OPTIONAL Highlights forms are also due back today. Even if you don’t wish to order, please send the form back with the “NO” checked. We can earn free items for our classroom even with declined responses. 😊
Have a fabulous weekend!

Great First Day!

Hello First Grade Families! Just a quick note to let everyone know we had a great first day!  Everyone was here, we all had snack and lunch, and dismissal ran smoothly for us.  YEA!

Students received their red ‘take home folder’ today, and that should go back and forth to school daily.  As we receive usernames and passwords for websites, I will put them in that folder, so please help your child develop a good habit of keeping up with that folder. 😊

Also, we have PE tomorrow, so please make sure to wear appropriate shoes!

Thank you for all your support! Have a wonderful evening!
